This Eve Johnson Houghton runner loves Brighton – winning at the seaside track six times – so that is the slight worry.
One of those wins at the course came last time out too, when scoring by 1/2 a length over 1m for today’s 7lb claiming jockey.
However, today’s conditions will be a lot different. Firstly, Uncle Dick is up in trip to 1m2f and the 11 times he’s tried 1m 1 1/2f or more he’s been beaten.
He’s also up 5lbs from that last win to a mark of 69 and so would need another career-best effort, with his highest-rated win (last time out) coming off a mark of 64.
The other thing to note is the different ground as last time he won on good-to-firm, but underfoot conditions will be soft today. Yes, he handles give in the ground (won on soft before). But that came over 1m off a 10lb lower mark, so my worry in soft ground today over this longer trip (1m 2f) – is will his stamina be getting stretched to the max?
In a trappy race we’ll also have CD winner Shalfa, plus recent scorer Bletchely Storm in our corner – while, despite winning on the horse last time, the jockey Oliver Carmichael is still very inexperienced with only nine career rides in total, which would be the final worry if I were a backer.
