Today’s pick comes with some risks as this Tony Carroll-trained 3 year-old heads here having won 3 of his last 4 starts. But, as a result, of these wins he’s shot up 8lbs from the first of those.
My other niggles, if I were a backer of Sub Thirteen, would be that he’s also been winning between 5f-6f and is up to 7f here today and the three times he’s raced over 7f+ he’s finished 8-8-8.
This is also a step up in grade to a Class 4, having been running and winning in C5 and C6 races. Yes, today’s ground will be fine but he’s never raced here at Chepstow, which would be another minor worry – but not a huge one as he has shown he can win at different tracks in the past.
I also think young jockey Jack Doughty, who rides the pick, is useful, so that’s another small concern in this apprentice race – he looks the best on show having ridden 26 winners. But this should help keep the price respectable.
But the horse will still need another career-best here off a mark of 68 – which is 3lbs higher than last time and in a higher grade – he only just got home by 1/2 a length last time to also suggest the handicapper might be catching up with him.
The final thing to cling to for us is that the Carroll yard are just 1-from-20 with their 3 year-olds at the track and in the last two weeks have only sent out 5 winners from their 43 sent to post.
