Firstly, this Peter Niven runner hasn’t won a race since June 2023 – 15 races ago – while the bulk of his successes have come over 6f – not 5f, which he runs over today.
He was last seen running second at Redcar at the end of last month, but was beaten 4 lengths that day and is running off the same mark. The winner of that race has since been well-beaten, which gives the form some knocks too.
Yes, connections are putting up 3lb claimer Mark Winn this time – but he’s ridden (and claimed) on the horse twice already this season and been beaten both times.
Hurstwood’s last win also came off today’s mark (55), with Winn riding – but he was also to claim 5lbs that day and only takes off 3lbs here.
However, as I’ve said, the main negative today for me is the trip. He’s won 8 times during his career, but only one of those has come over 5f and that was way back in 2019 at York on soft ground too.
