A trappy little 1m 4 1/2f race here, with only 5 runners – but very competitive with the grade.
The pick is handled by the Brian Ellison yard, who are just 3-from-39 here at Musselburgh, and despite running well at Catterick last time (beaten a nose) I think this race looks harder.
So – why am I taking him on?
The winner of that last contest has since ran badly at Chepstow, albeit in a slightly better race, plus this 5 year-old is still 4lbs higher than his last and only winning mark on the flat.
That success came at Beverley just two runs back, but Freddy Robinson only scrambled home by a neck that day and his overall record on the flat is just 1-from-12 – whereas, he’s got better form over hurdles (2 wins).
The final negative is the ground – as I’m not sure the good-to-firm here will suit as well as some cut. All three of his career successes have had some degree of ‘soft’ in the going (flat and jumps) – so will today’s conditions just be a tad on the quick side?
Looking at the other four in the race, they all have cases – including two proven CD winners in Spanish Hustle and Simple Star – to give us enough to cling to.
