What Makes Cheltenham Different?
Cheltenham isn't just another race meeting. The combination of undulating terrain, the infamous hill finish, and the sheer quality of competition creates unique demands that separate pretenders from genuine Festival horses.
The statistics support what experienced punters already know: course form and previous Festival experience are among the most reliable indicators of success. Horses with 3-6 previous Cheltenham runs consistently produce profit at level stakes, while one prior Festival outing appears to be the sweet spot – experienced enough to handle the unique demands, but not overexposed at the highest level.
The Road to Cheltenham: Key Trial Meetings
Dublin Racing Festival (1-2 February 2026)
The single most important pointer meeting. Since its inception in 2018, the DRF has produced 48 Cheltenham Festival winners. Eight Grade 1 races across two days at Leopardstown provide the clearest picture of which Irish horses are genuine March contenders.
Key DRF → Cheltenham pathways:
- Irish Champion Hurdle → Champion Hurdle
- Irish Gold Cup → Cheltenham Gold Cup
- Irish Arkle → Arkle Chase
- Deloitte Novice Hurdle → Supreme/Ballymore
- Boylesports Hurdle → County/Coral Cup

Festival Trials Day (24 January 2026)
The final major British trials before March. The Cotswold Chase (Gold Cup trial), Cleeve Hurdle (Stayers' Hurdle trial) and JCB Triumph Trial provide essential clues.
Notable doubles:
- Cotswold Chase → Gold Cup: Little Owl (1981), Master Oats (1995), Looks Like Trouble (2000)
- Only two horses have completed the Trials Day Triumph → Festival Triumph double: Katchit (2007) and Defi Du Seuil (2017)

King George VI Chase (26 December 2025)
The Christmas showpiece at Kempton remains a key Gold Cup pointer, though the flat track suits different horses than Cheltenham's undulations.
The facts: 11 of the last 25 Gold Cup winners ran in that season's King George. Desert Orchid, Kauto Star, and Best Mate all completed the double.

General Trends That Matter
Course Form
Runners with previous Cheltenham experience – particularly 3-6 runs at the track – have proven profitable at level stakes. The unique demands of Prestbury Park reward horses who've navigated the hill before.
Last Time Out Form
Leopardstown stands out as the premier platform for supplying Festival winners. Horses arriving via a Leopardstown hurdle last time have been particularly profitable in recent years.
Interestingly, horses beaten 3-10 lengths last time out have shown better returns than last time out winners, who tend to be overbet.
Previous Festival Form
One prior Festival run appears to be the sweet spot. Stage Star won the 2023 Turners having been pulled up in the previous year's Ballymore. Experience without overexposure.
Irish Dominance
Since 2020, Irish-trained horses have won over half of all Festival races. Willie Mullins alone typically accounts for 10+ winners.
